On September 25, 2015 members of the United Nations agreed to realize
sustainable development or known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The main goal of the SDGs is environmental social and economic development to overcome global challenges, especially in the world of education.
In line with the explanation above, the achievement of sustainable development
goals is also related to the development of science and technology in the 21st century. 21st century education.
Improving scientific literacy and an attitude of caring for the environment must
certainly have encouragement from the education system. Education has made various efforts, one of which is changing the learning paradigm from Teacher Center to Student Center.
Realizing scientific literacy and an attitude of caring for the environment, of
course, as an educator, must use the right approach in order to improve scientific literacy and an attitude of caring for the environment. One of the approaches that can be realized is the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics) approach.
The STEM approach provides opportunities for students to face the problems they
actually find in everyday life and are asked to provide solutions to these problems.
Including environmental issues. The STEM approach is also able to guide and train students to think logically, creatively, and critically.
In addition, it also provides skills to students to be more evaluative in solving problems (Lancaste, 2021).
Based on the results of research Asrizal, et al. (2022) using learning with a STEM
approach can make learning centered on students and make learning interesting and not monotonous so that it can improve student learning outcomes.
So it can be concluded that learning with the STEM approach is very suitable to be applied in the learning process to improve scientific literacy and students' environmental care attitudes. (mp)
